I enjoyed reading your letter. Your interests, connecting math, biology, and dance, sound fascinating! Much of my Master’s thesis dealt with theories of embodiment, or how the physical body is represented in literature and culture. Bringing in biology and math, though not my areas, could really highlight new perspectives, I think.
I’m glad to hear you enjoy journaling. It’s a great way not only to de-stress, but the more you write, the more comfortable you are with writing, and so journaling can help with everything from critical thinking to writer’s block.
In this class, we will have examples for each essay project we do, so hopefully that will ease some of your anxiety about structure. Of course, you don’t have to, or need to, follow the structure of the examples, but because so much of writing is imitation, you are perfectly free to do so.
I’m also glad you enjoy peer editing, since we’re dong a lot of it this semester. I think it’s very important to read others’ writing in order to develop your own critical skills, and it’s also nice to get good ideas from your peers. I dislike classes where the teacher is the only one who ever reads the students’ writing – you put so much time and effort into your writing, it should be read by more than one person!
Welcome to the class, and I look forward to learning more about you and your writing.
